Inspired by the honeycomb theme of the artwork of Gustav Klimt and the words of Henri Matisse..." there are flowers everywhere for those who wish to see ". So no doubt if you want to get in on a trend on the cheap, nail polish is the easiest way to do it. It seems like every season there is a new must have color. I am strictly a light pink or red girl, but years ago I read about all the dangers of most nail polish and made the switch to chemical free. I gave it up on my hands all together but still love a pretty pedicure on the toes. Did you know that nail polish can be one of the most toxic products you can put on your body ? The chemicals that give nail polish it's strong smell, no surprise are potentially dangerous. The 3 most harmful ingredients are dibutyl phthalate (DBP), formaldehyde and toluene. So after you figure out how to pronounce them get this, DBP may disrupt hormone levels and has been shown to cause birth defects in animals in large quantities. Formaldehyde has been known to cause cancer and irritate skin. Toluene can cause fatigue, nausea and birth defects. So now tell me why in the world would you ever paint this stuff on yourself or even worse on the little ones in your life ? Especially since there is no need to chance it, there are more and more chemical free lines coming out. I have been using the Karma Organics line for the last few years and Scotch Naturals are also great. It might take a little experimenting but I really think that this is one of those switches worth making.

...think French gamine in the 40's. With Summer coming to a close, a flirty frock feels like the perfect dress to make the transition into Fall. As the weather gets cooler just gonna swap out a pretty pair of heels for boots and tights.
Something about this song hints at amazing. Seems to come from such a vulnerable place. Interestingly Dallas Green, the writer and singer felt uncomfortable about putting music out with his own name so he came up with City and Colour, to represent his name, Dallas the city, Green the color. Doesn't really matter what he calls it, I call it real talent...
...the girl has got it goin' on. In this case it's the brown suede platforms against tan skin and a white mini, the delicate lace of the top versus the angle on the sleeves, the unexpected cuffs paired with pointy heels and the shrunken fit of the motorcycle jacket against bright orange silk. Yup these girls have got it goin' on for sure.

For me there is nothing that a good cup of tea can't fix. Not a morning goes by without a piping hot cup of tea to get me started. Most mornings it's my same green tea blend with lemongrass and honey. But there are so many great blends out there that are really beneficial to the body. It's worth it to switch it up every once in awhile. Lately I have been really enjoying a ginger tea and even if you are working your way through a box of another blend of tea, you can always grate up a little fresh ginger and throw it in to amp up your current favorite. The other really simple and super beneficial option is to brew up a pot of fresh ginger tea. The trick is to use more ginger and honey than you would think. Here is a super simple recipe...

...this video was shot in the subway in NYC for a series called Subway Sessions. I've watched a bunch of these and even seen one being filmed live. Doesn't seem to matter how long I live here I am always amazed that no matter what day it is, there is always a musician playing underground in the subways. People rushing to and from, barely even noticing the music, and they just keep on playing. The soundtrack of the city I suppose...

Get the goods...Nike Sneaker ( I have them in sky blue and love them) available here. dePalma Bags available here (the leather is crazy soft ). Amy's Burgers available at your local supermarket (a few other flavors as well, the California is my favorite). And for a super simple and delicious tahini dressing recipe click on over here. If you can find raw tahini in the jar opt for it. Not only does it contain so many more nutrients than the regular, it tastes incredible.
So we are currently under hurricane watch here in NYC for the next few days. Kinda crazy, first we had an earthquake here in the city earlier in the week and now the threat of this storm. Everyone is out gathering up water and batteries and they are even discussing evacuating parts of the city over the weekend. When I heard about this, I thought not a problem I know exactly where I can go. No need for batteries, canned food and flashlights. All you need is a bikini, a sarong and some sunscreen. The Bvlgari Resort in Bali sounds like the perfect destination out of the eye of the storm. The Italian label has not been in the hotel business very long but they have made quite an impression so far. Each resort is located in the most prime luxury neighborhood in the city. Designed with Italian contemporary luxury while making strong reference to the local culture. Among their flawless properties, their resort in Bali just might be my favorite...

Yesterday when I heard that Steve Jobs would be leaving his post at Apple, I thought about the brilliant impact that he has made on the world, in the way we communicate, in the way we consume technology. I have a tendency to write down a quote I find inspiring and carry it around with me in the back of my wallet. Steve Jobs wise words have been in the back of my wallet since 2005. He gave the commencement speech at Stanford University that year, I was out in San Fransisco at the time so after the speech lots of people were talking about his speech in Palo Alto. I scribbled this quote on a piece of paper...I have shared it here before, but it is worth repeating, " you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life ". The speech is about 15 minutes long but I promise you, it is worth the time spent...

This is another one of those books I have had forever and love. I found it years ago on a trip to California and no matter how much time passes, I always seem to go back to it again and again. Probably for all profound little gems like this one..."when you don't know what to do, pause for a moment. Sit down, be quiet, consider the first step, take it. Then think about the next step. Do research if it's appropriate; create a framework, but don't look too far down the road. That way, the first step can create a flow from which all other steps will follow. If you act from a deep place within you, that place will guide you ". I have been in the habit over the years of writing a little inscription on the inside of a book when I buy it, either to remember the day I bought it or what was going on in my life at the time, so when I look back on it, I can remember a day I might otherwise have forgotten. On the inside of this one I wrote..." California dreamin' and a few lazy days, palm trees and sweet honeysuckle. Seeking myself and a bit of zen, found again although I was never really lost. February 10, 2002. A good day, a very good day ".

There is something so inspiring about these sketches by UK artist Olivia Jeffries. Makes you think about how small we are in relation to the grandness of the universe. Over the last week or so here in NYC we've had a few chilly nights on our hands. A gentle reminder that summer is soon coming to a close, sooner than later. I've even spotted some boots and light sweaters on the streets. Although come on people, we have a whole Fall and Winter to break those babies out. Right about now seems like the right time to start to take out and stock up on light natural knits, that perfect sweater to transition from season to season. Summer to Fall or Winter to Spring...they just work all around. And if it feels to soon to let go of summer, they look great over a bikini at the end of a lazy day at the beach.

...you know when you see someone and although their overall look is great, there is just that one element that makes you think...the girl has got it goin' on. In this case it's the little bit of rebel in the t-shirt, the unexpected pop of color in the shoes, the perfectly worn in and rolled up denim jacket and the little twist on the typical ponytail. Yup, these girls have got it goin' on.

A few weeks ago in my Use Your Voice series I mentioned the importance of getting involved in the fight against the current famine hitting the people of Somalia and East Africa, in particular the children. Over the past few weeks Save the Children has started the " I'm Gonna Be Your Friend " campaign and a number of musicians have really started to use their voice. Just as most kids are set to go back-to-school and thinking about what are their favorite things to pack for lunch, millions of children are going without food. But, we can all get involved. The campaign's soundtrack is the classic Bob Marley High Tide of Low Tide, and as the lyrics say..." in high seas or in low seas, i'm gonna be your friend ". Download the song or donate to the cause directly through the links attached to video. Shouldn't we all help save the life of a child ?
When it comes to superfoods, cooking with them and eating them is not the only way to reap the benefits. These are two of my favorite, super duper simple at home skin masks that guarantee exfoliated and hydrated skin. The best part is, you probably have most of the ingredients in the kitchen already. If you are looking to exfoliate, the oatmeal gets rid of dead skin cells and lemon acts as a natural toner. If its hydration your after, the essential fatty acids of the avocado will do the trick, and the honey is one of my most favorite ingredients in the pursuit of soft skin. If you don't have time to do a full mask, my super quick trick is to smooth a teaspoon of honey preferably raw on your face and leave it on for a few minutes, then just wash off with warm water. Super skin is just a few simple ingredients away.

He always goes for the business section and knows to hand you the style section. After a few hours you glance at his arm, he still has the watch on from last night, somehow even though you bought if for yourself, you can't get it away from him. You discuss where to go for dinner, he says he doesn't care as long as you wear those blue heels and the dress he loves. You look at him and smile, and think to yourself, how lucky you are to have found him.

Whenever I listen to Melanie Laurent sing in her native French, despite the fact that I don't understand everything that she is singing somehow, it doesn't really matter. I guess sometimes an emotion is stirred that can't be put into words, no matter what the language.
Taken with the beauty of the photography of Matthew Brandt, in particular his " lakes and reservoirs " series. Each color photograph is soaked in the water of the particular body of water it represents to achieve the distorted and blurred, finished product. Almost like a metaphor for life, the thought that everything is not black and white but rather blurred somewhere in the middle. The fact that certain things will be left unfinished and some things are better left unsaid. The reality that not everything is what it seems...

When it comes to lip color I fall into the category of less is more, usually a plain old lip balm with no color or lip stain are my favorites. My beautiful mother on the other hand has always been on the hunt for the perfect lipstick, so I get the allure. You know how they say, " a new lipstick makes everything better ", guess that's why lipstick is big business. And then there is the urban myth that women eat six pounds of lipstick in the course of a lifetime, sorta crazy right ? So would you eat six pounds of chemicals ? No way. Did you know that many of the most popular brands of lipstick contain many dangerous ingredients including lead, yes lead. Over the last few years there have been some really great additions to the options on all natural lipsticks so there really is no reason to risk it. These are a few of my top picks with the bite line of lipsticks as the top of those picks, great colors in a range of pigments from sheer to full coverage. And a quick tip to keep that pucker extra soft and kissable, make a mixture of a little sugar and lemon juice and rub over lips to exfoliate and smooth.

...isn't there just something about an old Western movie ? Classic. And there is something about rocking a little cowboy chic that never gets old, only better. A pair of jeans worn in just right. Or one of my all time favorites, a lived in fitted denim shirt, unsnapped to reveal a mix of sterling silver and turquoise necklaces. Sleeves rolled up with piles of silver and leather bracelets. A little fringe and a pair of lived in boots, scuffed up to perfection. Doesn't matter how many years pass, the look is always a classic in my book.

If you asked me which supplements I think are the most important to take everyday, without a doubt Coenzyme Q10 also known as CoQ10 would be right up there in the top 5. CoQ10 is produced naturally in the body, found in every cell and tissue. It is involved in a number of biological functions including helping to produce energy, and get this, it is responsible for 95% of the body's energy. It neutralizes free radicals and keeps cells both inside the body and in the skin healthy. As we get older studies have shown that we have 50% less CoQ10 on average compared to when we were a young adult. This makes supplementing it back into the body extremely important once you are over 30 to stay young and vital. As we age the ability of cells to regenerate and withstand stress declines and the aging process begins to set in. Not only does it stave off the aging process of the body, it also keeps the heart and brain young. In numerous studies in patients with heart failure, low levels of CoQ10 were detected, so to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system supplementation is key. It is also used to treat migraines, gum disease, Cancer and Parkinson's Disease to name but a few. Think of your body as an energy powerhouse, and this is the stuff to get in running on all cylinders.
*check with your healthcare provider before starting any supplements that you are unsure about, but always remember that doctors and drug companies don't make a profit on vitamins or supplements so, unfortunately they don't always endorse and recommend them, despite the fact that they help save lives.

...this weekend marks the 42nd anniversary of the Woodstock music festival. Last night I was rewatching old videos of all the amazing performances, man do wish I had been there. The freedom of it, the coming together despite everything that was happening in the world at the time. The beauty in the desire to share a peaceful experience with no expectations other than a few days of good music. Richie Havens opened the festival, his music has always struck me as the calm after the storm. Introspective and gentle come to mind. His rendition of the classic Beatles tune " here comes the sun " has always been a favorite. The last line gets me every single time..." in the end the love you save, will be equal to the love you gave "...

I was putting away some books today and I pulled this one off the shelf and started flipping through all the turned down pages, marked with little stars next to all the things I wanted to remember. This is one of my favorites books when it comes to inspiration and understanding the way the universe works. I sat down on the floor for awhile and got lost in it's amazing message. The reminder that, all things wanted or unwanted are brought to you by the laws of attraction. Nothing merely shows up in your life, you attract it, all of it, no exceptions. Giving thought to anything is just like inviting it in. When you give attention to a thought it grows larger and larger. That counts for the good thoughts and the bad thoughts. If you give thought to something you don't want, it also grows. The reminder that there is nothing that you cannot do, be, do or have.

...what's better than a classic Stones tune to get the day going or to unwind it? Warren Haynes and Grace Potter giving it a go, recorded on a rainy night in Negril, Jamaica. ...I think every room deserves a good rug. Everytime I spot a room with a rug layered in I always think, yup that is just what that room needed. Over the years I always thought my bathroom was missing something, I finally found a mini Persian rug to throw in there and just like that my little bathroom was complete. I recently came across a great company called Custom Cool Rugs, perfectly named because they are pretty cool. You can work with them to design your own custom rugs, color, pattern and size. Each one is like a piece of artwork. And the best part, other than the fact that you designed it yourself, they work with an organization called Good Weave. Good Weave has a mission to end child labor in the rug industry. Sadly labor is a crime committed against one in seven children around the world. Yes you read that right. Despite laws prohibiting it, child labor is rampant in the rug industry in South Asia where many of the most beautiful rugs are created. Click on over to their website here to learn more, donate to help end this madness and even find responsible retailers, designers and decorators who have made the pledge to get involved. And onto things that are beautiful and ethically created, these beauties woven in Nepal for Custom Cool Rugs. Check out the rest here...
