The Girl Has Got It Goin' On...

...you know I always say it just takes one element. Could be a great color, a cool sweater, the addition of something unexpected and one of my favorite looks, socks with chunky open-toe shoes or the perfect bag and just like that you Got It Goin' On.

Accidental Brilliance Superfood + Supplement Series...Benefits of Bamboo

So if you have been following Accidental Brilliance or you are new around here, it is no secret that I am on a quest to find the best all natural supplements and products for healthy skin and hair. Bamboo was one of those supplements that surprised me. You might not think of bamboo when it comes to achieving healthy skin and hair but bamboo extract is one of those wonders of natures that does amazing things. Bamboo extract comes from the leaves and stalks of an edible grass that is eaten by many of the world's animals. It is a rich source of silica which is an essential nutrient for humans. Silica plays a great role in keeping the skin and hair healthy. It improves the health of the skin by helping absorb essential minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium. It contains anti-oxidants which help minimize wrinkles and boost radiance. It offers the skin anti-irritant properties which soothe the skin when used as an active ingredient in creams and lotions. When it comes to the health and shine of the hair bamboo is very useful. When used in shampoo it improves the overall health of the hair by helping to clean the hair ducts, remove build-up of product and pollutants and restore shine and luster. Silica from bamboo extract has also been proven to strengthen the musculoskeletal system, improve the condition of the nails and teeth and help lower cholesterol. There are many ways to take advantage of the the benefits of bamboo, it can be taken in supplement tablet form, added into shampoo and skincare products but the easiest and best way to get the benefits is to add bamboo shoots into your diet. The perfect ingredient to add into your favorite stir-fry or steamed vegetable dish to really amp up the nutrient value of the meal, totally worth it if it means glowy skin and shiny hair right ?

Sunday Simple Wisdom of Buddha + Somethin' from Loch Lomond...

...JUST BE plays over and again in my head on a daily basis. I try consciously to BE...present, aware, kind, curious and calm no matter what is going on around me. I know we will never have this moment again so we have to consciously decide who it is we want to BE and just go and BE it.

...just a few seconds that's all it takes to bring yourself back to yourself. For today...take a little time to be aware of yourself and the exact moment you are in. Forget everything that is wearing you down, weighing you down...for a moment let it go. Just BE.

The Decemberists. Playin' On Repeat Today...

Got into a taxi in Boston the other day and this played in the background, when I asked the driver to turn it up he said, you know these guys ? I said I sure do, I love them. He looked at me and said,  music is something else and without skipping a beat I said it sure is, a common ground that brings people together with lyrics in place of words you might not have otherwise had. We both agreed and after a moment of silence both started singing out loud...lyrics in place of words.

Inspiration Found. The Artwork of Eduard Tomek...

Inspiration found in the blurred edges and almost whirling motion of Eduard Tomek's work. Somehow speaks to the tendency to doubt your gut instinct, go against what you think is best and get caught up in a blurred vision that takes you away from where it is you meant to go. Life is about motion, and despite the fact that on occasion we are taken off course, the key is to stay focused and quiet within yourself, so that you can hear your gut...it will lead you where you need to be, that I know.

Benefits of Bran...Accidental Brilliance Superfood + Supplement Series

Most people don't eat nearly enough fiber to truly get the benefits. On average most eat about 12 grams of fiber but did you know that we really need about 25 to 40 grams a day ?  Over the last few years I have increased my intake of fiber for a few different reasons but mostly for the benefits to the health of my skin. Bran which is the outer layer of husk of grains such as oats, rice and wheat is a serious powerhouse in the nutritional department. Due to the essential fatty acids, protein vitamins and minerals bran is proven to  help lower cholesterol, improve heart and intestinal health. And on the road to better health, intestinal health is quite possibly one of the most important elements to well-being. With proper intestinal health you can help your body capitalize on and utilize the food you ingest. And once we are on the road to better absorption of nutrients into your blood stream your body is able to properly get rid of toxins. And we all know that the build up of toxins is dangerous and allows disease, bad skin, dull hair and a host of other health issues to arise. There are a number of ways to get more bran into your diet but remember that you need to be eating a source that is as close to 100% bran as you can find. My favorites are GG Scandanavian Bran Crispbread, only 12 calories a cracker and 50% fiber. Give them a try that are great with a few slices of avocado, tomato a drizzle of olive oil and a dash of cracked pepper. Bon appetite to good health !

Accidental Brilliance Monday Muse...

...no doubt when it comes to defining your look I think hair is one of the easiest ways to do it. For me a shiny head of long hair is always muse worthy.  And in the pursuit of shiny hair one of my favorite tricks is to warm up a little jojoba oil and coconut oil and smooth it on your hair before bed, wake up and wash it out to reveal healthy shiny hair. If your looking for a supplement to help nourish and strengthen hair check out BioSil, click on over here to see the post I wrote about it last year. And no matter what your style just rock it with confidence, that's all that really matters !

Weekend Distractions...

Sunday Simple Wisdom of Buddha + Somethin' from Timmy Curran...

...how simple and how true. We live in times where more is more and sadly we waste so much...time, energy, emotion on situations that are not worth all that we have spent. Practice conserving, practice making a situation better. Practice taking better care of of yourself and all the people in your life that treat you well and deserve all that you have spent on them. More is not more.

Destinations...Cavas Wine Lodge, Argentina

Set in the foothills of the Andes, Mendozza is the world's fourth largest wine making region and clearly one of the most picturesque locales. How does this sound...stay in one of the adobe toned stand-alone casitas. Wake up to breakfast on your terrace overlooking the vineyards and get ready to spend the day exploring the beauty of the land on a hike or a horseback ride or soaking in a wine infused bath followed by a grape seed exfoliation. On to dinner in the vineyard followed by star gazing on your rooftop terrace beside your outside fireplace. Sounds good right about now, doesn't it ?

It is often the case that without that, there could not be this. One experience, good or bad leads us to the next experience, one person leads you to another, one flash of light leads you to an idea, one moment leads to the next. They go hand in hand all you have to do is let it happen...

Benefits of Buckwheat...Accidental Brilliance Superfood + Supplement Series

I recently went to buy a jar of my usual California wild black sage raw honey and the shelves were empty of my favorite brand except for a jar of their Buckwheat honey from Washington. Not what I am used to but, I figured I would give it a try. Deeper in color than usual honey, almost an amber color and stronger in flavor. After I made my first cup of tea I got curious about the benefits of buckwheat.  I had had buckwheat soba noodles, had a memorable stack of buckwheat pancakes in Sonoma, California and even tasted a buckwheat beer, but that was about it. Why wasn't it more prevalent ? Interestingly the cultivation of the buckwheat grain declined sharply in the 20th century when, the use of fertilizers really took over. But there are so many incredible health benefits and it is the perfect substitute for rice and grains.  There is no wheat in buckwheat despite the name so it is gluten-free and great to promote lower blood pressure and cholesterol, the list of benefits is really impressive. I think I will stick with the honey and here are a few of the reasons why.  Buckwheat honey fits into the class of healing honey. Proven to help strengthen capillary walls to prevent the onset of heart disease, helps the liver process hormones keeping our bodies properly balanced, which as we get older is key in keeping our mind balanced and our body vital. In women it is believed to help prevent breast cancer. And of course during cold and flu it is the perfect addition to a little lemon for a scratchy throat. Next time you whip up a batch of pancakes on a Sunday morning swap out your usual flour in favor of Buckwheat flour, to punch the nutritional value up a notch. Here's a simple recipe to get you started. Bon Apetit !

Think Different...

I loved this Apple campaign when it came out in 1997, it was simple and true and nobody had said it better...

" Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits, the rebels. The troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of the rules and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things, they invent, they imagine, they heal, they explore, they create, they inspire, they push the human race forward. Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art ? Or sit in silence and hear a song that's never been written. While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. "

And here is Steve Jobs in his own powerful words. Hopefully it inspires you to seek your own genius and be your own change...

He Was Brilliance...A thought on Steve Jobs

After hearing the sad news that Steve Jobs had passed, I thought about a post I had written about him and thought I would share it again along with the amazing, moving commencement speech he gave at Stanford in 2005. In this ever changing technological era we live in, he harnessed creativity, knowledge, passion and power to become an innovator beyond compare. I wrote this post a few months ago when he left Apple and my sentiment remains the same. In my mind he was inspiration on the highest level and brilliance personified...

Yesterday when I heard that Steve Jobs would be leaving his post at Apple, I thought about the brilliant impact that he has made on the world, in the way we communicate, in the way we consume technology. I have a tendency to write down a quote I find inspiring and carry it around with me in the back of my wallet. Steve Jobs wise words have been in the back of my wallet since 2005. He gave the commencement speech at Stanford University that year, I was out in San Fransisco at the time so after the speech lots of people were talking about his speech in Palo Alto. I scribbled this quote on a piece of paper...I have shared it here before, but it is worth repeating, " you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life ". The speech is about 15 minutes long but I promise you, it is worth the time spent...
