Benefits of Flaxseed Oil...Accidental Brilliance Superfood + Supplement Series

There are many supplements I take everyday and others I rotate in and out depending on how I am feeling health wise, flax seed oil is one that is a pretty constant in the mix. Flax seed oil is a rich source of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. Lately no matter where you look there is more and more news coming out about the importance of essential fatty acids, and for good reason. If it is better cholesterol, more efficient metabolism, hormone regulation, cardiovascular health and better cognitive thinking ability to name just a few- flaxseed oil just might be worth adding into your routine. But, did you know that it is all about the balance. Omega 3 tends to reduce inflammation while omega 6 has been known to promote inflammation.  An inappropriate balance of these fatty acids leads to disease while a proper balance leads to better health. A healthy diet should consist of roughly two to four times more omega 6-fatty acids than omega 3-fatty acids. The typical diet contains 14 to 25 times more omega 6-fatty acids than omega-3. Many researchers believe that this is the reason that we have such higher incidences of disease and inflammation. It is simple to get it into your diet, I just take a few tablespoons straight up but you can add it to smoothies and salad dressings for a nutty flavor. My favorite is Barlean's Cold Pressed Oil but check out what your local helath food store carries. Promise this is one supplement worth the investment.
