There is a Middle Eastern saying that goes something like " he who fills his stomach with melons is like he who fills it with light- there is a blessing in them ". And indeed there certainly is a light and many benefits in a single serving of melon. There is an amazing amount of vitamins A + C. In just one cup of melon you get 100% of your daily needed dose of vitamin A + C. Studies have shown that the riper the fruit the higher the vitamin and mineral content- so choose the ripest melon you can find. Summer is prime time to indulge in melon as their peek growing season is June through August + there are so many light, easy + summery ways to incorporate them into your menu. This salad is as simple as simple gets.

It is all inside you...all that you need exists right in your heart if you take the time to get to know yourself, trust yourself + listen to the thoughts that float through your mind when you allow yourself to think about the things you want + the things you don't yet know how to have. The answers, the ideas, the dreams + the confidence is all there, all you need to do is tap into it. It has been said that, the only failure is the failure to not try. So try...look inside + realize that it is all there, everything that you need.

For today please believe this...everything does happen for a reason. In certain instances it is hard to believe this but, there is a master plan for your life. If you live an honest life + walk on with perseverance the twists + turns that made little sense at some point will make the sense you might have not been able to find at one point or another. Believe in chance, believe in things that don't work out, believe that the universe will present you the right opportunities, connections + people that you need at exactly that moment. Live in this moment + let it roll. Life will take care of you.

...when it comes to skincare I believe that what touches your skin should always be natural, always be pure. I fall into the camp that less is more when it comes to most things + especially what touches our skin. Rather than pile on all sorts of makeup + product I tend to try to find ways to create the exfoliants, revitalization + refreshment my skin needs with products I can find at the health food store. Did you now that Greek yogurt makes a great scalp mask to help beat dandruff + dryness, crush up aspirin + make a paste with water to zap + dry out pimples, smash up strawberries + lemon to make a natural toner, brown sugar guarantees soft skin, and cover your face in honey for the simplest + yet best face mask I know of, combine tumeric + Greek yogurt for a skin brightener...the list goes on forever. Why not keep it simple with what you put in + on your body right ?

...no doubt there is nothing better than the idea of packing a bag + hitting the road for the beach. Surf boards on the roof + adventure on the mind. Sun drenched skin, bikini tops + worn in sandals, good music + good company. The hope that the water will be warm + the sun won't go down although, just as it sets...there are stolen kisses + midnight breezes. Falling asleep with the screen door open so the waves crashing wake you and beckon you back to do it all over again + again.

...this one is called Let It Be, and there is a lot of sense in the idea of letting things be. Rather than force something, overthink something or simply mess with fate, let it be. If it is meant to be whatever "it" is, it will be. Stay positive + occupy the space in your mind where "it" already exists.
Can't take my eyes off the beauty of William Miller's Ruined Polaroids. After buying a polaroid camera at a garage sale for $20 only to find out that it was broken, he discovered that although it was putting out two photos at the same time, the result were amazingly unpredictable works of art rather than simply photographs. It is a beautiful lesson in the fact that although when we look at something we see one thing, there is incredible potential for it to turn into something that we never would have expected. They are a magnificent insistence to take a chance + let things develop on their own, as they may.

...doesn't seem to matter how many tops I have, want or probably don't need there is nothing to me that does the job better than a simple white tank cut just so...enough bra showing but not too much, the perfect neckline + a worn in just right. Recently tried to cut a few DIY versions but perfecting it is not as easy as it seems. Found out the hard way that sharp preferably new scissors work the best so you don't get jagged edges. Came across this tutorial for another version that might be worth giving a try.

Because there is only a very short growing season for cherries, you need to get em' while you can + if you live in the United States now is the time to enjoy them in all sorts of recipes. Cherries known as a “super-fruit”, are packed with antioxidants called anthocyanins which aid in the reduction of heart disease and cancer. Cherries are one of the few food sources that contain melatonin, an antioxidant that helps regulate heart rhythms and the body’s sleep cycles. Cherries are an excellent source of beta carotene (vitamin A), they contain 19 times more beta carotene than blueberries and strawberries ! Kinda crazy but they truly are a " super-fruit ". Cherries are rich in vitamins C, E, potassium, magnesium, iron, folate and fiber. They are referred to as “brain food”, aiding in brain health and in the prevention of memory loss. Because cherries contain anthocyanins, they can reduce inflammation and symptoms of arthritis and gout. Eating cherries reduces the risk of diabetes + they are a good source of fiber which is important for digestive health. Because of their powerful anti-inflammatory benefits, cherries are said to reduce pain and joint soreness for runners and athletes after workouts. There are tons of really great ways to incorporate them into your diet + this salad is one delicious way. It is an unexpected mix of ingredients but so good. The recipe calls for kale which packs it's own superfood punch but you can substitute your favorite greens to create this simple crowd pleaser.
When it comes to style muses, Nicole Richie is always right up on there on my favs list. I have lost count of how many pieces I have from her Winter Kate clothing line, but her kimono tops made of vintage silks are a closet staple for me. She mixes the vibe of the 60's + 70's in the most current carefree way- this little lady is always muse worthy in my book.

What makes someone beautiful ? The question is so interesting because to each person the answer is different yet, there is a constant + that is that it has nothing to do with a person's looks but it is the level at which they can be themselves- confident, accepting + sure that their beauty is the combination of all they are. What is beautiful ? It is when you find the person or people who believe in you, trust in you, accept you and who love you like no other.

It's interesting to look back on your life + think about the people, places + things you thought you could not live without- then there is the realization that sometimes things fade away because their time is done...initially there is a sense of sadness, in some cases I suppose loss. With time + experience we learn that when something fades away something makes it's way in. The key is to let things go + know that something new will arrive. Our responsibility is to let it in + trust that when it arrives, it is because we are ready for it.

...lately lovin' a little layering action in the necklace department, usually I am all about the arm candy but been piling up a bunch of fragile silver + diamond necklaces together with some turquoise beads thrown in for good measure, kinda adds a little somethin' somethin' to even a t-shirt. And the nice thing is you don't need to go out + buy anything new you can sorta pile up whatever you have in your collection + suddenly you got a little unique intrigue around the neck.

Recently I wrote about the importance of music + you know that old question- if you were trapped on a desert island + could only take 3 artists/groups music, what would you take ? Without skipping a beat The Rolling Stones rolls right off my tongue. Today marks 50 years that Mick + the boys first performed together at a gig at London's Marquee Jazz Club. I have so many amazing memories wrapped around The Stones, from remembering my parents listening to them when I was a kid on vinyl, to meeting a handsome stranger on the subway who I later fell in love with who asked me if I knew where the Memory Motel was...yes I said as the song played in my head "it's on the ocean I guess you know it well"...to a late night years ago in a club on the dance floor in NYC, I spun around and realized the guy I was suddenly dancing with was Mick Jagger. He later bought a bottle of champagne for me + a few friends, chatted for a bit + then disappeared into the night. The next morning in The NY Post on page 6 the article read of Mick's whereabouts the night before and the fact that he forgot to pay his bar bill ! So here's to you Mick, you certainly do rock my world !

When I started this blog years ago, I did it because I felt like I kept coming across people, music, art, fashion + inspiration that I wanted to honor, share + admire. No doubt as I always say there is beauty all around us, all we have to do is look for it + with beauty usually comes the poetry in life. I have been following The Forest Feast for quite awhile now for just those reasons- the beauty + the poetry...and of course the amazing recipes. Like a sort of fairytale, creator Erin Gleeson shares her story of moving from NYC to a cabin in the woods of Northern California. The recipes are simple + delicious, the photography + the illustrations are beyond brilliant + so well done.

...and although they had drifted apart, when she thought back on it she let all the bad go and now only remembered the good. The guitar beside the bed, the way he made her laugh, the tiny notebook he carried in his back pocket to write all the places they had been + plans they made. As she put on the shoes he had bought her she thought of him + for a moment got lost in what was for a time, true love.

In my quest to have the healthiest skin + hair I was recently reading up on the best supplements to add to my usual daily Biosil + Biotin combo for healthy hair. Stumbled on the benefits of Riboflavin or vitamin B2. Riboflavin is a water-soluble ( meaning you excrete the vitamin through urine, which means your body constantly needs this type of vitamin to be replaced ) nutrient which functions to help body cells create energy from the metabolization of carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Riboflavin is critical for normal growth and repair. It is needed to facilitate normal reproduction, cell growth and repair, and development of tissues. The body utilizes vitamin B2 to keep tissue health and to help accelerate healing of injuries. It is required for red blood cell production. Along with iron, vitamin B2 is an essential nutrient for the production of red blood cells, which are responsible for the transport of oxygen throughout the body. Riboflavin acts to help the immune system function properly. It bolsters the immune system by reinforcing the body's reserve of antibodies, which guard against infection. Vitamin B2 helps to promote healthy skin. Vitamin B2, along with some other nutrients, is vital for healthy vision and for preventing cataracts. Along with other B vitamins, vitamin B2 helps to protect the nervous system. It could be a component of treating various mood disorders, nervous system disorders, including anxiety. And, along with all these amazing benefits it is proven to promote and maintain healthy hair. Seems like this needs to make it into the daily list for sure !

We all know that there are many things we can do, be + see...but, if there is one thing we should concern ourselves with, it is that we stay true to who we are. Being authentic is so important in life. There is amazing clarity, freedom + beauty in believing in who you are deep in your soul + acting without fear upon what you know about yourself. Stay true to you.
...there is a bit of comfort in the thought that if it's meant to be it will be. + although I agree I do think it is up to us to make the most of what comes our way. Seize the chance to have the best of what will be.

Can't take my eyes off the artwork of Arite Kannavos. There is a beautiful randomness in the way the paint slips down the page into what are beautifully deliberate colors. Each piece reminiscent of the layers we all have + how although we would like to keep everything neatly in it's place the amazing part of growing older is that we take what we have learned, what we have seen, what we have done and like the paint slipping down the canvas it all slips into what is the masterpiece called our life...sometimes messy yet always beautiful.

Someone asked me the other day to name the ten things I am most grateful for, without any thought I immediately said my family + music. The list went from there but truly there has never been a time where music has not been a part of my life everyday. Somehow music is a friend through the good times + the bad, a voice when you can't find the words...a connector with the power to take you back to the past and help walk into the future. The soundtrack of my life...grateful indeed. I used to take a few minutes before bed to think about what I was most grateful for that day, I got out of the habit but I think now is a great time to get back into it. Simply put your head on the pillow and just before you doze off think about your day and list a few of the things that made your day special, things that you feel grateful for.
Back in college I wore a silver ear cuff, I don't have pierced ears so it was the closest I got to earrings at the time + it also always felt just a little different. No idea what ever happened to it, just one of those things that was a constant companion and then one day wasn't, life is funny that way, you go through fazes of loving something until you find something else. Lately I have been thinking that an ear cuff is the perfect addition for summer. Came across a few that are really beautiful in 14kt gold by Mr.Kate check em' out here...really beautiful and I like that not everyone is wearing them.

You can have what you want...the thought is bold yet I suppose scary. It means you need to know what you want + how to ask for it. In the fast pace of the day to day where we seldom get the chance to stop and think about it, knowing what we want is sometimes buried beneath it, the list of things we have to get done the conversations + errands that make up a day. Before you know it, life is racing by and you never really got to say it...what you wanted, what you meant to ask for. But, the beautiful part of life is that it is never too late, for anything...to be who you want to be or have what you truly want...
...someone once told her that whatever you believe in, you should believe in firmly + visualize it will be yours. And so she did and when he showed up, the first thing she said right after hello was...what took you so long to get here. I have a whole lifetime of stories to tell you + a lifetime of love I have saved up to give you.

I recently started studying + reading about the benefits of flower essences in healing. Although they are not entirely common, they are pretty amazing in stimulating the bodies own ability to heal on all levels of our being simultaneously. They can address imbalances on an emotional, mental, physical and spiritual level. To understand flower essences (also called `flower remedies'), you can imagine that all things are made up of vibrating energies. All material objects are made up of huge amounts of energy. Your entire being is involved in the healing process. The flowers acknowledge you as an intricate being comprised of different levels of energy and work on healing the whole "you".They work by balancing your personal 'vibration' or unique energy pattern. This means that they stimulate lasting changes, rather than just cover up symptoms as many common medicines do.They are completely safe, natural and non-habit-forming. There is no plant material in the essence, only the energetic imprint of the flower. This means there can be no adverse reactions. You cannot take too much of an essence, and if the essence you have chosen is inappropriate for your needs, nothing happens. Just try a different essence.Flower essence healing is self-adjusting to the bodies individual needs. The essences are intelligent and so they adjust their effect to suit the bodies ability to cope. This ensures that any difficult issues are dealt with gradually. They gently help to remove our 'layers', bringing to our awareness other issues or traits that may be undermining our well-being. No doubt it takes a bit of studying to understand how to properly use and benefit from them but I started here with a complete assessment guide and questionnaire + read up on this amazing site about the many many benefits each essence has. Whether it is a hormonal imbalance, a heartbreak, fear or the common cold there is a flower essence that can gradually change the energy + intention that can move you towards healing.
