Happy New Year...

On the first day of a brand new year, I wish for you all that you see for yourself through your clearest eyes. There is a beautiful Zen proverb that says, leap + the net will appear. This year, I hope that you follow your passion + trust that it will lead you where you need to go. Listen to your heart.  Live with intention + love with complete abandon. Embrace simplicity, trust your instincts + speak your mind...always. Spend the year nourishing your body + soul. Collect experiences, not things. Set a goal + accomplish it. Believe in yourself + be yourself. The new year is all yours for the taking. Happy New Year sweet wonderful you + as the last line of the song says...just in time, in the right place may you steadily emerge with grace...

Simple Wisdom of Buddha + Somethin' from Colin Hay...

Peace comes from within...with a peaceful mind, no matter what life throws your way, you are prepared + able to handle it. We each have a reserve of patience, wisdom + perseverance that enables us to handle every single situation that we are faced with. When you are at peace you are able to access those reserves. Finding your own personal peace is part of the journey + in many ways perhaps the most important part of the journey

For Today...

Breathe deeply + keep moving forward. Acknowledge the cracks + scrapes but...seek positivity, follow your passion + above all for today, go easy on yourself.

Taken by the artwork of Paul Richard...

While on a walk downtown today I was stopped in my tracks by this portrait painted right below my feet on the sidewalk...this amazing little painting between the cracks of dirty pavement where so many walk each day. I stopped to take this photo + wondered how many people have walked by it or over it without even seeing it. Perhaps that was the point, to remind us to open our eyes because there is so much we are missing. Focus on the moment + what is right in front of you floated through my thoughts. Don't worry about the future or be concerned with the past, the moment is now. The artist is Paul Richard, a noted street artist + today for me a sage of sorts with the gentle reminder to give your energy to the current moment,  you will never have it back again.

Use Your Voice...International Rescue Committee

We are each driven by different motivators that get us out of bed in the morning + let us sleep soundly at night. Very deeply I have always felt that we are all here to help others. Making a contribution however we can is, so very important. The International Rescue Committee has impressed me for a very long time. They respond to the world's worst crises + help people survive + rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries + 22 U.S. cities, they address crisis with compassion. Their mission is simple...bring help + hope. As wars rage on + natural disasters continue to ravage our earth, millions face unimaginable suffering. There are so many ways we can all get involved + this is one organization who does what they say, they bring the solutions. Now is a great time to help them in their efforts + for every donation you make they are matching your contribution. They also guarantee that 93% of your donation goes directly to aid in their relief efforts. And, even if you can't donate there are a number of ways to get involved + Use Your Voice to affect change. I have said it before, it is all the small things that we do together that result in the biggest changes. Click on over here + get involved.

The Girl Has Got It Goin' On...

...something he said repeated in her thoughts. Always remember that everything is connected he had said with conviction. There are so many people that walk around + look but...few truly see. With all that she was she knew, she knew she saw...the beauty, the purpose, the struggle + how intimately we are all connected. He had told her that there were no limits to what she could do. Summon your strength because the moment is now. We are all capable of so many amazing things...simply remove the limitations that you + others have placed upon you. You will find your rightful place + when you are there you will not only be appreciated,  much of the sense you have sought will come. We are all connected...remember that.

Accidental Brilliance Superfood + Supplement Series...Benefits of Barley

There is no denying that we all need to get as much fiber as we can get into our diets. Barley might be one of tastiest ways to do it. This ancient grain gets pretty overlooked these days. But, there are so many benefits of barley. It makes the perfect substitute for rice or pasta in most recipes + is way more nutritional. This nutty flavored superfood is not only a low-glycemic grain, it is high in both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber helps the body metabolize fats, cholesterol and carbohydrates, and lowers blood cholesterol levels. Insoluble fiber—commonly called "roughage"—promotes a healthy digestive tract and reduces the risk of cancer. It is an excellent source of niacin which promotes healthy skin + hair. It provides high concentrations of tocotrienols, the "super" form of vitamin E. It also provides lignans, phytochemicals that function as antioxidants. It has also been proven that women who consume lignans (also present in high levels in flaxseed) are less likely to develop breast cancer. There are a bunch of super recipes to get your dose of barley but, this one is  simple + fast...try it as a side dish or a main course alongside a hearty bowl of lentil soup and you are set.

Matthew Perryman Jones..Tunes For Today

With the holidays upon us I am struck with the thought that we shouldn't wait to celebrate simply on holidays. There are so many moments that happen in a day that deserve celebrating + it's the collection of all those small moments that really make up a life. It's the smile of a stranger, the heads up penny you pick up for good luck, the hug you receive that feels so good you hold on a bit tighter, the first sip of coffee or tea in the morning, the knowing that you are loved + appreciated. I chatted with a woman the other day who had recently lost her husband...when I wished her happy holidays she replied, " but everyday that we wake up is a holiday". Indeed it is so...happy holidays or rather happy everyday. Don't take any of it for granted...the good, the bad + all the in-between. This is your life + it is so worth celebrating everyday.

Wisdom of Buddha + Somethin' from This Will Destroy You...

...be calm. There will be many things that will happen in your life + in the moment may seem out of your control. Know that you have control over everything in your life. Be calm + trust that everything that is being presented to you + is present in your life right now is there because not only can you handle it but, you can also grow from it. Be still + take as much time as you need to decide what is next. There is no rush, find the calm + remain there in it until the sense you seek comes. Trust your instincts + let them guide you.

...because keeping it simple is the best way to proceed. Often people are inclined to make things more complicated than they need to be + sometimes people will not let you be as simple as you would like to be...STAY SIMPLE. Find those people + experiences,  the ones where there is flow, where this is freedom. In a world where we are often judged for what we have done, what we do...seek them out, the ones where there is no judgement. Know that does not mean that everything will be easy with them, but focus on the simplicity of it all, the goodness of it all.

Jerry Douglas...This One Playin' on Repeat

Essentially we are all travelers + there will be times when the road ahead will not be clear. It is when the road seems to twist + turn  that the journey will have the most to offer...the most to teach. A very wise person said to me today that we are not here only to learn our own lessons but that the lessons of those around us have so much to teach. The thought of gratitude floats through my thoughts, for the strangers or perhaps deliberate souls put in our path to make the road clearer, for the twists + unexpected turns + for each step closer we get to the clarity we seek...

For Today...

...there are moments where you sit with someone + they recognize you for who you are. Despite your flaws + uncertainties they see you...the real you. It is important to have these encounters to remind us who we are. In a world where we are not always understood + commonly find ourselves settling for situations that are not quite what we deserve, it is these encounters that gently remind us to be sure that we get what we need. Nobody will ever be able to tell you what you need, only you will know that. Nobody will be able to give you what you need, that too you will have to provide for yourself. The only thing you can do is continue to do your best + realize that if you are lucky to find people who not only see you for who you are...truly who you are + also let you be who you are...sometimes flawed, other times complicated but often magnificent...you have won half the battle. For today be who you are + know what you deserve.

Moments + Miles Davis...

...and here is a moment, you will never have it again. Don't turn your back on it, even when things are difficult find the purpose. Moments often collide + it is in the moments of almost impact that things make more sense + people are brought closer together. Folded within the collision, the impact, is the purpose...look for it.  There will never be a way to control the way the particles fall + there in lies the lesson...give up control,  just let it go + stay right there in the moment. The next moment will naturally come, trust that. Sense will arrive + combined with your own efforts, the fate that is already destined to be, will be.

Simple Wisdom of Buddha + Somethin' from Alanis Morissette...

...recently find myself thinking about the importance of feeling grounded, rooted firmly not only physically but spiritually. There are few things that can be figured out, appreciated or experienced unless you are working from a place of calm, a place of security...seldom can you find that anywhere but within yourself. Lead from the inside out, you have everything you need within yourself...the courage, confidence, sense + determination to make anything happen, it's all there.
